Jack Ross on why Mickey Gray will be praying Doncaster Rovers reach the play-off final

Jack Ross insists he does not care who Sunderland meet in the play-off final - but says there is one Black Cats fan who will be praying there is no replay of the 1998 final against Charlton Athletic.

The Wearsiders' goalless Promotion is one step away as Sunderland reach Wembley and Jack Ross makes history last night was enough to earn an aggregate win and book a place at Wembley for the final a week on Sunday.

And tonight they will discover their opponents when Charlton and Doncaster Rovers meet at The Valley in their semi-final second leg.

Charlton hold a 2-1 advantage following the first leg which makes them favourites, and if they win it would see the Black Cats and the Addics face off at Wembley in a re-run of the First Division final of 21 years ago when the sides drew 4-4 after extra-time, only for the Londoners to win the sudden-death penalty shootout.

Sunderland defender Mickey Gray was the unlucky man who saw his penalty saved by Sasa Ilic in the shootout, and he will be the man in-demand as a pundit if there is a repeat of that final.

Ross said: "I’m sure the way that that panned out for Mickey, he will be hoping that Doncaster win tonight because otherwise he will get asked an awful lot of questions!

"I’m well aware of that game, it was more than 20 years ago, and how big a game it was.

"But from my point of view, at this moment in time I couldn’t care less who we play in the final!"

The 1998 play-off final between Sunderland and Charlton is regarded as one of the most exciting games ever played beneath the Twin Towers of the old Wembley Stadium.

Sunderland fan Clive Mendonca gave the Addicks the lead midway through the first half but goals from Niall Quinn and Kevin Philips put Sunderland in front before the hour.

Mendonca levelled 20 minutes from time, only for Quinn to restore Sunderland's lead almost immediately.

Charlton's Richard Rufus scored five minutes from time to send the game to extra time, with Nicky Summerbee again putting the Black Cats in the driving seat before Mendonca completed his hat-trick just before half time in extra time.

That meant the game went to a penalty shootout, with the Addicks winning 7-6.

Sunderland are unbeaten against both Charlton and Doncaster this season.

They beat Charlton 2-1 on the opening day of the season at the Stadium of Light, and drew 1-1 in South London in January.

They completed a League double over Doncaster, winning 1-0 in South Yorkshire in October, and then 2-0 on Wearside in April.
