Jack Ross offers Jamie Murphy injury update after Hibs winger limps out of Betfred Cup win

Jack Ross is sweating over the fitness of Jamie Murphy after the Hibernian winger limped out of the Easter Road side's Betfred Cup win over Brora Rangers with a hamstring issue.

Thee 31-year-old was replaced by Martin Boyle four minutes into the second period after feeling discomfort in the back of his leg and could now miss back-to-back away trips at Cove Rangers and Forfar Athletic.

Ross said the issue did not appear to be serious enough to warrant a longer spell on the sidelines, but admitted it was concerning to lose another member of a tight Hibs squad to injury.

Joe Newell missed Wednesday's 3-1 win with a shoulder problem picked up in the league victory over Hamilton Academical last Friday, while the men in green and white remain without the services of Scott Allan due to an ongoing medical issue.

Meanwhile, a quartet of players will miss the double-header against the League One side as Josh Doig, Alex Gogic, Ofir Marciano and Ryan Porteous represent their countries at international level.

He said: "Jamie felt his hamstring but I don't think it is too serious.

"Saturday will be too soon for him and Tuesday possibly too."

Newell should return for the trip to Ross County in Premiership action and Ross is hopeful Murphy will join him in the squad for that game.

A host of fringe players were given the opportunity to impress against the Cattachs with new signings Dillon Barnes, Kyle Magennis and Stephen McGinn all making their debuts.

Stevie Mallan popped up with a double - his first brace for the men in green and white in over two years - on his return to the starting XI before Paul Hanlon headed in a late third after Dale Gillespie's free kick gave Steven Mackay's side a fighting chance.

It is likely to be a similar side that lines up at the Balmoral Stadium when Hibs travel to face League Two winners Cove on Saturday and Ross confirmed he will continue to rotate his squad throughout this run of Betfred Cup games.

"I don't put undue pressure on players to prove anything to me but they all understand there is competition," he said.

"Joe [Newell] was out because of injury and Alex Gogic is away on international duty so it was an opportunity for them to get minutes and put in a good performance.

""We will keep using the squad over these games."
