Jack Ross lays down Hibs challenge as he highlights achievement of third place

Hibs boss Jack Ross admits he's surprised the club haven't finished best of the rest more often - then urged his players to make sure it does become a regular occurrence.

The Hibees ran out 1-0 winners at Pittodrie to secure their first third place finish in a 17 years and Ross insists it needs to be an ambition of everyone to do it more often.

Christian Doidge got the only goal of the game and Ross was visibly delighted with getting it done, as he admitted the season could become 'outstanding' if they win the Scottish Cup next week.

And while he admitted he would rest a lot of players this weekend for their clash with Celtic ahead of the cup final, he believes the Easter Road side need to keep their levels high.

The win at Pittodrie was Hibs' first there since 2012 and Ross admits a demand of his this season was to win at places like that, and he's thrilled they finally did it.

He said: “I’m really pleased. It’s significant for us as a club, it’s 15 years since we got there as a club and it’s an ambition to challenge up there year after year.

“For that group to set that ambition and then achieve it is outstanding. To do it here at Pittodrie where we’ve not had a good record and I challenged the group way back in October when we came here that we needed to come to places like this and win.

“It feels fitting that we’ve clinched third place in that manner.

“When I’ve come into the job here and grown to understand the stature and history of the club, I’ve been surprised that the club hasn’t finished in this position far more often than it has done.

“It’s only a handful of times in my life time. It’s a challenge for the club to be in this position and be in cup finals and semi-finals like we have this season.

“It’s been a brilliant season for us and it could become an absolutely outstanding one with the cup final but I’m so pleased for the players they’ve got the reward.”
