Jack Ross expects a new signing to arrive at Sunderland before the weekend

Jack Ross says Sunderland could have a new defensive recruit before the weekend after allowing Donald Love to depart.

The Black Cats boss said earlier this week that he needed to move players out before he could bring in new faces, and the club has agreed to let Love depart on a free which has given Ross room to manoeuvre.

Ross is keen to reinforce his defence and following tonight’s 2-0 pre-season friendly win at South Shields , he confirmed that an incoming transfer is imminent.

“I am hopeful that over the course of tomorrow we may add one in a defensive area that will help us and strengthen us and give us qualities that we haven’t currently got in the squad,” said Ross.

“We’ve been patient and careful in our recruitment. There are two sides to that - there’s no need to rip it up, and even the two [new signings] that we played tonight Lee Burge and Conor McLaughlin showed why we brought them to the club, particularly Conor.

“But with Donald leaving, it has allowed us to move forward with bringing another one in.”

Aside from strengthening the defence, Sunderland have also been heavily linked with a move for Walsall midfielder George Dobson and he is another player that Ross is thought to be looking to bring to Wearside.
