Jack McCaffrey thinks it will take years for Dublin's historic five-in-a-row to sink in

Dublin's Jack McCaffrey says the enormity of the five-in-a-row won’t hit the Dublin players for years to come.

Jim Gavin’s side achieved immortal status as they became the first team in GAA history to win five senior All-Ireland titles in succession after a six-point win over Kerry in Saturday’s pulsating final replay.

“I don’t think it will register until we finish up,” said ace wing-back McCaffrey.

“There is no point saying otherwise, this is going to be a massive source of pride for us as a group when we look back at it.

"But the time to look back is when you have hung up the boots and when we meet up for a drink to watch the new young Dublin team going out and playing.

“It is definitely something that will be very, very special for us.”

Speculation has surrounded the future of several Dublin players, chief among them veteran goalkeeper and captain Stephen Cluxton, in the wake of the feat.

But McCaffrey said: “Stephen is a big softie. Someone asked me about retirements and I don’t think this is the time to talk about it and if anyone does decide to do so then more power to them.

“The commitment involved in this is no laughing matter but when you are enjoying it and you are in the height of it, there is no better place to be.

“Life is life and everyone has stuff to deal with so if anyone decides that their innings is done I am sure they will let us know over the coming days and weeks.

“We will meet up and swap stories and we will wish them all the very best. We are an evolving team and we will probably have a new look coming back next year but that’s a problem for another day.”
