Jack-knifed HGV closes St Helens Linkway with pool of oil

A jack-knifed lorry and oil spillage caused chaos on a major St Helens route this morning.

The Sherdley roundabout was closed completely following the incident, leading to delays on all approaches.

Routes affected included the A570 St Helens Linkway, and Sherdley Road.

The congestion was reported to have spread to Ravenhead Retail Park and St. Helens Retail Park.

There were also delays along Peasley Cross Lane heading towards St Helens Hospital as traffic sought alternative routes.

A recovery operation was under way to clear the HGV after it suffered mechanical failure.

Pictures taken at the scene showed a thick pool of oil leaking from the vehicle on to the road surface.
