Jack Johnson and Friends - This Warm December Vol. III review: Stripped-back festivities ditch the jingle bells for acoustic sounds

This, Jack Johnson’s third Christmas compilation, sees him again team up with his regular musicians.

There are acoustic guitars aplenty, numerous harmonicas, and a bluesy track to ring in the new year, but don’t expect OTT jingle bells or cheesy trimmings on the stripped-back tunes.

The soulful rendition by Bahamas of I’ll Be Home For Christmas brings the Forties classic into 2019 with tweaks to lyrics, a percussion-led interlude and dreamy female backing vocals. A rare set of bells joyfully chime during the synth-led opening of Sleigh Ride. Zach Gill and Mimi Najaa duet.

On foot-tapping opener New Axe, Johnson’s easy-listening vocals offer musings on “loved ones watching down on us”, while Zach Rogue’s Mrs Santa Claus provides a romantic indie ode to Father Christmas’s better half.
