NEWARK, N.J. _ The New Jersey Devils have not lost a game in which Jack Hughes had a point.
Hughes scored the first goal of his NHL career and Mackenzie Blackwood pitched a shutout in the Devils 1-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday at Prudential Center.
Hughes now has two points on the season and a two-game point streak. The Devils, after that dismal start, also have a two-game winning streak (2-4-2).
Even better, he did it against his older brother, Quinn Hughes, a rookie defenseman for Vancouver.
Jack gave the Devils a lead with a power-play goal at 14:08 in the first period. Blackwood made it stand up but the unsung hero of the game was the penalty kill unit. The Canucks went 0 for 7 with the man-advantage and even when blows were thrown in the second period the aggressive unit prevented any tying goals.
There was a humorous incident where big brother Quinn blew past little brother Jack and fooled him at the blue line but Jack got his money's worth for his top-shelf power-play rip. He has the same amount of goals as Quinn and one fewer point.
"Sami (Vatanen) made a nice play to Hallsy and Hallsy found the seam to me and I put it upstairs," Hughes said of the setup by Taylor Hall. "Just a really nice goal for our PP to get on the board and nice for me too."
