Jack Harrison predicts Patrick Bamford injury return as Leeds United man drops murderball warning

Leeds United's list of charitable endeavours was been added to by Jack Harrison on Friday afternoon as the Whites winger presented Yorkshire Cancer Research with a cheque for over £30,000.

Harrison had taken the decision to auction his matchworn shirt from the 3-2 win over West Ham United in which he scored a hat-trick, and would select one lucky donor to receive and keep the signed strip.

At a ceremony inside Elland Road, Harrison posed for photographs, chatted with competition winner Rebekah Sheldon and her family, as well as taking time to speak with local journalists.

"I had some unfortunate experiences with cancer and knowing some people who had unfortunately passed away and I think the latest was a young boy who actually lived in Holland. His dad was a massive Leeds fan.

"He'd been writing letters to myself and my mum.

"When we actually played Ajax in pre-season we were able to get in touch and I invited him to the game. I was able to meet him for the first time which was incredible really because he was really sad he'd had his leg amputated and been suffering a lot but you could still see how happy he was."

Harrison told LeedsLive he decided to auction the shirt on the bus back from West Ham following a conversation with his girlfriend.

"It was after the game, it wasn't 'til we were on the bus on the way back I was speaking with my girlfriend and she was saying 'why don't you do something for the fans or something to raise money for a charity, something like that', I said that's a good idea I'd been wanting to do something like that.

"It was hard to give away the shirt but like I said I'm happy to do it for a cause. I'm just happy to have raised so much money for that."

"All the players are quite open to doing things that help the community, different charities and stuff like that," Harrison said.

"I think the media team here does a fantastic job of that as well, making sure we cover as many bases as possible and trying to help as many people as possible, too.

"I feel like we do a good job here as a club supporting the local charities and helping the community."

Cancer survivor Sara Williamson who works with the Yorkshire Cancer Research charity commended Harrison using his platform and influence for good: "I think he's amazing, for someone of his age I just think it's powerful what he's done financially. It's just brilliant. Huge impact."

Recently, Patrick Bamford's centenary shirt was raffled for close to £30,000 in another charity drive. Harrison revealed there was a light-hearted competition between the pair at Thorp Arch to see who could raise the most money.

"To get over £30,000 was incredible, I wasn't expecting that at all, in fact the media team were telling me closer to the time that Patrick Bamford's shirt had just gone for around £30,000 and we wanted to beat him as well so it became a bit of a competition. Obviously in good faith, really. Just happy to give to a good cause really."

On Bamford, Harrison was asked about the injuries which have punctuated the season. While Marcelo Bielsa could not offer a recovery timeline for the forward, Harrison indicated that Bamford's return would be soon.

"I think with Patrick [Bamford] coming back soon and getting Adam Forshaw back, it'll be good going into the Villa game and we just have to take it game-by-game and that's it really.

"I think Junior's come in, he's been a fantastic teammate, I've got along with him really well. At times it's difficult because not only do you need that relationship but you need that team chemistry on the pitch as well and that can take some time too. I felt like we were starting to click against West Ham and unfortunately he had the injury," Harrison added on teammate and left-sided partner Junior Firpo.

"I do like playing with him, we connect really well and we're working on that chemistry now, too."

The 25-year-old insists the mood in camp remains high despite defeat to Newcastle United last time out, and a few days where players were afforded a break from routine training.

However, he predicts a return to normality next week with a Marcelo Bielsa special prepared for the returning squad.

"We've had some time off which has been nice, but I think the manager is going to work us hard coming up to the Villa game. He's already got three murderballs lined up for next week so that should be interesting. Obviously I think we're going to prepare really well, train really hard as normal and make sure we're prepared for Villa."
