Jack Grealish transfer could be good news for Liverpool as FSG set to spend millions

Here's your Liverpool Morning Digest for Sunday August 1.

Man City's £100m Jack Grealish move could be good news for Liverpool's transfer plans

It has taken a month, but this might have been the week in which the transfer window truly burst into life.

The Premier League's big clubs are finally splashing the cash, with Man City and Manchester United showing their hand just over two weeks before the season gets underway.

Liverpool, meanwhile, still have one of the lowest net spends among Europe's biggest clubs, and despite the signing of Ibrahima Konate before the window even opened, remain concentrated on offloading fringe members of the squad.

But business elsewhere could help the Reds' own ambitions come to fruition.

Liverpool and FSG set to spend millions on future of Jurgen Klopp's team

Here's a question for you: when is a big-money Liverpool signing rarely greeted like a big-money Liverpool signing?

No prizes for correctly ascertaining such a scenario exists when the player in question happens to already be on the books at Anfield.

Players putting pen to paper on contract extensions and improved deals rarely generate the same enthusiasm among the fanbase as a mega-bucks fresh faces joining the ranks.

Not that Liverpool supporters were anything but delighted at Trent Alexander-Arnold agreeing on Friday to extend his Anfield commitment to 2025 with a new deal.

It also made the 22-year-old one of the highest earners among Jurgen Klopp's squad, a decision with which few would grumble given the integral role the right-back has played in the Reds' success since graduating from the Academy to the first team almost five years ago.

Over the course of Alexander-Arnold's deal, the increased cost to Liverpool will be significant, albeit far, far less than having to go out and buy a player of similar standard.

Multiply that several times over, though, and it's clear wages will take an increasing chunk out of the club's budget over the coming years. With success comes reward, and that's rarely cheap.
