Jack Grealish sparks angry Irish fan reaction over tweet following England Euro 2020 squad announcement

Seven days after initially planned, Gareth Southgate on Tuesday finally announced the 26-man squad that will represent England at Euro 2020.

Unsurprisingly, Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish was included in the Three Lions squad.

The 25-year-old didn't feature much in the second-half of the Premier League season due to injury, but his performances before then were to such a standard that he undoubtedly warranted inclusion in Southgate's panel.

However, as Republic of Ireland fans know, at one point in his career, it appeared that his international future was not with England.

Grealish represented Ireland at U17, U18 and U21 level, and in March 2015 was named FAI Under-21 Player of the Year.

A couple of months later, he denied a call-up to then senior manager Martin O'Neill's squad as he looked set to switch his allegiance to England.

For several years it looked like he may never get the chance to represent England, but only last year he was finally handed in senior debut by Southgate.

On Tuesday, he received the squad number 7 for the Euros, which perhaps is an indication of the main role he'll play in this England squad.

He took to Twitter in delight, saying: "An absolute honour to make the squad for the Euros this summer.

"I’ve always dreamt about playing in a major tournament for my country! Let’s make it a summer to remember #ThreeLions."

But social media users were quick to remind him of his Republic of Ireland days.

One person shared a picture of Grealish representing Ireland as a youngster, saying: "Only English when it suited you."

Many Grealish fans rallied behind the Villa player, defending him for playing for the "country of his birth".

But one Irish fan angrily replied: "Yeah so then don't play for Ireland in the first place. Don't deny someone who really wants that opportunity.

"I don't care that he plays for England. It's his choice. He went about it like a snake though."

Another pointed out: "Why did he play for the Republic of Ireland if it was his dream was to play for England?"

Another Twitter user highlighted Grealish's use of the word "always" and added: "Since about two years ago you absolute melt."

One Irish fan added: "It's only been your country for about three years."

While several more posted multiple pictures of Grealish representing Ireland underage with the captions: "Always wanted to play for your country [snake emoji]", "A dream you say..." and "Did you have the same dream for Ireland as well?"
