Jack Grealish's Manchester City squad number confirmation raises Harry Kane transfer question

Jack Grealish is a Manchester City player and has become British football's first £100m signing.

City have smashed their own transfer record to sign Grealish from Aston Villa, with the fee higher than the previous highest fee paid by a British club for a player.

The former Aston Villa number ten is City's biggest ever signing, and has been rewarded with a shirt number to reflect that standing.

Grealish, who also wore number seven for England this summer, will replace Sergio Aguero as City's new number 10, which could be read as a significant message over the club's plans to sign Harry Kane.

While the 10 shirt is befitting of a player like Grealish, especially at the transfer fee paid, it would arguably be more suited for the potential arrival of Kane later in the transfer window.

So for City to give Grealish the prestigious number ten, it suggests either Kane might not sign, or if he does the England captain would have to settle for another less iconic number.

Grealish also explained why he opts to wear such small socks and shinpads after his unveiling as a City player, saying: “I am not a superstitious person but when I was about 15 or 16 I was playing for the Under 18s. That year the socks just kept shrinking.

"I wasn’t a first team player so I couldn’t really go and say give me a new pair of socks every day. I just kept wearing them and then they wouldn’t come over my calves.

"That season I probably had my season where I took off and started kicking on. I started wearing them in games and it was just one of them where I thought I would keep it.

"I kept it and I can’t say it has worked ever since, but I think it is my style now and it is something I do and I am going to keep.”
