Jack Grealish's magical Man City fan moment shows we are too quick to judge footballers

Abbie Pinder will likely remember Manchester City's 4-1 FA Cup win against Fulham for the rest of her life.

City bounced back from an early setback to see off the free-scoring Championship leaders, securing a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup for the sixth consecutive season under Pep Guardiola.

The Blues are still fighting on three fronts with a treble a distinct possibility, but when a certain video emerged on social media after the game, all that seemed to fade away.

Abbie was waiting just inside the doors of the players' entrance at the Etihad Stadium when her hero Jack Grealish walked in. When the England star saw the homemade sign propped up in front of Abbie's wheelchair he smiled and walked over, only too happy to sign Abbie's City shirts and give her a hug.

On her white 'Grealish 10' away shirt he wrote: 'To Abbie, lovely to meet you today beautiful girl. Lots of love, Jack'. She was so ecstatic she wept.

She even got a visit from Kyle Walker after the game, the England full-back chatting about the game to the young fan - ever the proud defender, he could not fail to ruefully mention City conceded first.

Judging by the amount of abuse and criticism that Grealish has received ever since joining City from Aston Villa last summer, you could be forgiven for thinking that he is not a nice person. After all, how could someone labelled as a 'diver' and a 'money-grabber' have other people's emotions and well-being at heart?

The common perception of Grealish is that he is a 'typical' footballer, more concerned about his hair and brand deals than his performances on the pitch. That he has not lived up to the goal-creating reputation that he earned at Villa has been used as more fuel by his critics.

But to use on-field issues - which in Grealish's case are likely only temporary - as justification to judge someone's character is just plain wrong. The same can be said of many footballers.

For many years, Grealish has been an active supporter of Acorns Children's Hospice in the West Midlands. In December, he arranged for tickets for City's home match against Villa in May to be offered to users of the hospice, a gesture that is by no means a one-off.

"Jack has been to Acorns many times over the years and we are always so struck by the warmth and kindness he shows to children and their families on those visits," Acorns chief executive Toby Porter said.

Grealish isn't the only City player whose public perception is well wide of the mark. Raheem Sterling is similarly ridiculed and abused every time City play away from home, yet for years he has worked to tackle racial inequality and to create opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Some individuals in the game give professional footballers a bad name, that is undeniable, but they should not all be tarred with the same brush.

Grealish was the nation's darling at Euro 2020, but following his £100m transfer to City he is booed everywhere he goes. Football tribalism will likely never go away, but what should be recognised is that many footballers are good people.

"I was so happy, he made my dream come true," Abbie said of Grealish's heartwarming gesture.

Football fans tend to expect players to change the world with superhuman efforts on the pitch. Sometimes, it's the little things that matter most.
