Jack Grealish can surpass Bruno Fernandes after Man City transfer

Manchester City completed the most talked-about transfer of the summer on Thursday, with Jack Grealish arriving from Aston Villa for £100 million.

It's well documented that the England ace is one of the best creative midfielders around, so City fans will be salivating at the thought of him lining up in blue alongside the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling.

But just what can City fans expect from Pep Guardiola's new weapon? Here are five aspects of his game to look forward to:

He will create chances

Simply put, Grealish is one of the Premier League's best creators.

Last season he carved out 70 chances from open play, second only to Bruno Fernandes, while his total chances created was only bettered by Fernandes and Mason Mount.

What's more incredible, however, is Grealish played 11 and 10 games fewer than them respectively. With a full slate of games, he would have surely topped the charts.

Last season he provided his Villa teammates with 10 assists, two fewer than Kevin De Bruyne. With the attacking talent that will surround him at City, he could easily match the Belgian's output.

Directness

The only real criticism that some City fans have of their team's champagne football is that sometimes it could be more direct. Over the past few seasons, Grealish has shown that he can address that.

Just by watching Grealish play you can tell that he's a player that likes to run at defenders, get in the box and make things happen. The stats back up this assessment too.

Grealish is a complete dribbler who likes to carry the ball. Over 26 games last season he carried the ball into the penalty area 80 times, more than any other Premier League player. That he trumped second-placed Raheem Sterling 's tally of 62 carries, despite playing five games fewer, speaks volumes about his ability and persistence.

The Birmingham-born creator also topped the rankings for progressive carries — running with the ball towards the opponent's goal — with 306, along with Adama Traore. Clearly, few players get at defenders quite like Grealish.

Team-player

While Grealish is superb going alone, but he'll just as happily pass to a teammate.

He is a phenomenon in the sense that while he leads the league in carries into the box, he almost does the same for passes. Per 90 minutes, only Callum Hudson-Odoi and De Bruyne (surprise surprise) made more passes into the penalty area last season.

In fact, when he gets into the box Grealish actually prefers to pass than dribble. Last term he completed 3.5 passes into the box per 90 minutes, as opposed to roughly 0.6 1v1 dribbles in the box per 90. He'll fit in just fine with City's pass-heavy attacking play.

Signature move

Every so often those special players come around that pull off the same move time and time again, yet defenders are powerless to stop them. Arjen Robben had the cut inside, Andres Iniesta the Croqueta.

Grealish's trademark trick is the drop of the shoulder. Every game he does the same thing; he makes to go one way the suddenly drops his shoulder and surges past the defender on his opposite side. It sounds a simple move, but it's deadly effective.

Such a rapid switch in direction and body weight makes it hard for defenders to keep up and make a clean tackle. Expect to see it a lot at the Etihad Stadium.

He'll be fouled - A LOT

This may not necessarily be a positive for City given their relatively poor conversion rate from free-kicks and penalties, but last season Grealish was by far and away the most fouled player in the Premier League.

He was fouled 110 times last season, testament to his ball-protection capabilities and streetwise play. If City find themselves in situations where they need to keep the ball, kill the clock and frustrate their opponent (like they did against PSG), then Grealish will be useful to have.
