Jack Draper vs Gael Monfils LIVE: French Open scores and updates from late-night thriller

Jack Draper is through to the third round of the French Open after holding off the thrilling challenge of Gael Monfils and silencing the raucous Court Philippe-Chatrier to win a four-set classic.

The 38-year-old Monfils looked to be dragging Draper into a fifth set after breaking to lead 5-2, but the British No 1 dug deep to win the next five games in a row and seal a 6-3 4-6 6-3 7-5 victory at close to midnight local time in Paris. Up next for Draper in Paris? Rising 18-year-old star Joao Fonseca, who is also through to the French Open third round for the first time.

Elsewhere, Jacob Fearnley is through to the third round after opponent Ugo Humbert retired injured. Humbert, the 22nd seed, was hurt after falling over his ankle behind the baseline and Fearnley will play Cameron Norrie in an all-British third round clash.

Before then, British No 1 Katie Boulter was demolished by Madison Keys 6-1 6-3 on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Boulter also won her first main draw match at Roland Garros on Tuesday but Keys, the Australian Open champion, was a step up in class.

'Special to be a part of'

23:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Jack Draper with a quick word to TNT Sport:

“It was special to be a part of tonight. Massive respect to Gael on and off the court, what he brings. He makes it so tough. But I was happy with how I competed in a really tough environment.”

Let's hear from Jack Draper

22:55 , Jamie Braidwood

“Bon soir,” Draper begins. “First off, Gael, yes it was my first time on this court, but what an experience, what a battle against someone I admire as a tennis player. Off the court, the guy is so nice. He’s a joker, he’s a magician, I hope he makes it back here one more time.

“I’ve played some tough ones in grand slams. Playing Gael and you guys as well, this is why I play tennis, to play in front of big crowds, whether they are with me or against me.

“My brain was fried out here. I’m not sure if I’m going to sleep tonight because of what he was doing out here. That’s why the players love him, not to play against him.

“There were times I was frustrated but there were times I reminded myself this is why I put in the work, to play on courts like this and with players like Gael who get the best out of me. I enjoyed it even though it maybe didn’t look like it.”

Now a love-hold for Keys. This is getting very ugly for the British No1.

Boulter 1-6 0-1 Keys* - Keys breaks

16:51 , Jamie Braidwood

Not the start Boulter needed. For as much as the first set was closer than the scoreline looks, this could now turn into a rout. Keys forces more errors from the Boulter racket and there’s another double fault in there too as the American breaks to start the second set.

*Boulter 1-6 Keys - first set to Keys

16:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Boulter floats a return long and Keys takes the set. It looks one-sided, but there were a lot of close, lengthy games there. Still, it’s all too easy for the American, who has the bigger strike and has settled well.

Boulter has struggled with the serve, making just 47% of her first serves and winning under 50 per cent of total points in her service games. She’s also been kept to just two winners, to Keys’ 12.

The timing has gone from Boulter’s forehand, or at least Keys is taking it away from her. Three forehand misses in a row from Boulter see Keys get a look at three break points.

Boulter saves, with some variety. But the ball-striking it too constant from Keys, and the double faults from Boulter aren’t helping. A fifth of the match so far sees Keys take the double-break.

There’s the break for Keys, and it comes on a double fault for Boulter - the third in two games. Keys is putting pressure on the second serve with her big returns, but a poor game for Boulter to drop.

A half-chance for Keys as a forehand skips off the baseline and catches out Boulter, who frames the ball.

Keys thunders the second-serve return into the net, but the American then connects with a crisp backhand crosscourt.

Break point: Boulter saves well to target the Keys backhand with the inside-out forehand.

A more routine hold for Keys as Boulter nets a forehand low into the net.

Keys is forced to save another break point and then mixes it up with a short slice. Boulter can’t pick it up. Boulter then goes long on the return and Keys holds. Some promising signs for Boulter but a couple of missed opportunities.

Boulter and Keys are wearing identical Nike kits.

Boulter digs in well on the Keys service game and lands a backhand down the line before the American double-faults to bring up deuce.

Already the points are short and sharp, but Boulter has already landed some blows on the returns.

Already there’s a break point as Keys nets, but she saves with a huge net-cord.

Katie Boulter on Madison Keys match-up

15:58 , Jamie Braidwood

We’re expecting a battle of two big hitters today. Not too much touch. Lots of striking from the baseline.

“Obviously someone like Maddie Keys is a similar game style to me. She's got a slam under her belt, so I see no pressure firstly,” Boulter said.

“Secondly, it is a very different matchup. It's going to be more about who gets the first strike in, who's on the ball with every single point.

“It's going to be a very different matchup. I'm going to have to raise my game a lot. Yeah, it's a challenge. I'm excited for it.”

After her first-round win, Boulter said she was proud of how she had persevered to finally get off the mark at Roland Garros.

“Sometimes I find it really difficult on this surface,” Boulter said, “I persevered and tried my hardest to bring some good tennis and obviously my first Roland Garros win, you never forget those ones.”

Tributes for Richard Gasquet

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are among the players to have sent video messages to Richard Gasquet on his final French Open appearance.

Gasquet, who first played at the French Open in 2002 but only ever reached the quarter-finals once, certainly could have had more success if it wasn’t for being born in the greatest era of men’s tennis.
