Jack Doyle’s oblique injury ‘not a major concern’

The Indianapolis Colts have had to deal with their share of injuries to begin training camp, which now includes an oblique for veteran tight end Jack Doyle.

After missing Thursday’s practice due to what was called a “minor oblique injury,” head coach Frank Reich told reporters that he’s not concerned with Doyle’s outlook. They are staying with the mantra of taking it slow with injured players to begin training camp.

“Not major. It’s not a major concern. Jack (Doyle) is a pro. I just have a lot of confidence. We don’t want to rush it with him,” Reich told Indy media. “Mentally, we all know Jack so it’s just a question of physically getting him right. I said to him the other day, ‘Hey, let’s use this as a positive.’ It just gives him more time to get his strength back, more time to recover. He will be ready to go.”

Doyle is coming off of a 2018 season in which he was limited to just six games. First, he dealt with a subluxation of the hip in Week 2, and then he suffered a season-ending kidney injury in Week 12.

Entering the final year of his contract, Doyle is expected to be an integral part of the offense working as the team’s TE1. Given his reliability as a pass catcher on short routes and his ability to be one of the best blockers at the position across the NFL, the 29-year-old will hold a crucial role once he’s healthy.

The Colts will be taking their time getting the injured players ready to return, and Doyle’s core muscle injury will be one to monitor as training camp progresses.
