Jack Charlton: Ireland fans to celebrate life of legendary boss at Walkinstown Roundabout as World Cup winner is laid to rest

A celebration of Jack Charlton's life on the day of his funeral will take place tomorrow at the Walkinstown Roundabout.

The legendary Republic of Ireland manager died at the age of 85 last Saturday.

The former Leeds and England defender who won the World Cup in 1966 had been diagnosed with lymphoma in the last year, and was also battling dementia.

And if there was one video that could sum up Jack Charlton's massive impact on Ireland - both in sport and culturally - it remains the iconic images from the Walkinstown Roundabout.

It was 1990, and Ireland had just beaten Romania on penalties to make it to the quarter finals of the World Cup in Italy.

Arsenal's David O'Leary netted the winning penalty in the shootout to book a quarter-final date with the hosts.

The Roundabout became the home of one of Ireland's most iconic World Cup moments as hundreds of punters converged on the roundabout to celebrate the win.

Crowds emerged from the Kestrel and Cherry Tree and took over the roundabout in a moment that is now immortalised.

The clip has grown to near-mythical status, the perfect representation of the impact that great Ireland side - with Charlton at the helm - at it's peak.

And local fans will have the chance to say one last goodbye to the man who dared Ireland to dream at the location of those famous scenes.

People are being urged to gather safely from 11:30, with social distancing emphasised by the Cherry Tree, who are organising the event.

The pub's resident DJ will play "Put 'Em Under Pressure" at 12:30 to coincide with other radio stations nationwide.

The event description reads: "On the sad occasion of the funeral of Jack Charlton, we invite you to celebrate his contribution to Irish football at Walkinstown Roundabout, probably the scene of the most iconic location of Italia 90, during his tenure as Ireland manager.

"This is a family friendly event, with full adherence to social distancing guidelines.

"We would ask you all to wear green, bring banners, flags, hats, flatcaps and be as colourful as possible.

"Sports clubs particularly welcome in your club strip.

"DJ, organised by Gerry McGeough of the Cherry Tree, will be playing the songs of the era with emphasis on, "Put 'Em Under Pressure", at 12:30 to coincide with all radio stations nationally."
