Jack Byrne to join Ireland squad for Wales and Bulgaria games after Covid-19 recovery

Jack Byrne will sit out the England clash before joining the Ireland squad for the Wales and Bulgaria games.

The Shamrock Rovers star tested positive for Covid-19 on international duty last month and only returned to action for the Hoops on Wednesday.

Rovers play Derry tomorrow, Shelbs on Monday and have an FAI Cup quarter-final away to Finn Harps on Saturday week that could yet be hit by call-ups.

But explaining the reason why Byrne will miss the Wembley clash on Thursday, Ireland boss Stephen kenny said: “It’s just the medical advice.”

Kenny continued: “I wasn't going to include Jack at all.

“Up to Wednesday’s match (against St Pat’s) the advice was that it absolutely knocked the stuffing out of him, it had knocked him for six.

“You can’t just jump from being sick and then try to get into international football. It's too big a jump.

“If he plays games on Saturday and Monday and has a full week’s training under his belt then he might be in a different place come the two Nations League games.”
