Jack Byrne set to sign with Cyprus side APOEL Nicosia managed by Mick McCarthy

Jack Byrne is poised to complete a move to APOEL Nicosia once he has completed a medical at the Cypriot club.

The Ireland international has decided to leave Shamrock Rovers just two years after joining the Tallaght outfit from Kilmarnock - and after inspiring the Hoops to the Premier Division title last season, the club's first since 2011.

Byrne, 24, will reunite with Mick McCarthy, who gave him his senior international debut in a friendly with Bulgaria in September 2019.

McCarthy has been keen to bring the midfield playmaker on board since taking the job with the Cypriot club at the start of last month.

Byrne spent time in Doha before Christmas, where he took some time out to decide his future with Bournemouth, Stoke City and Colorado Rapids all reportedly interested in signing him.

The Dubliner had an arrangement with Rovers going back to the summer that he would make his mind up by a certain date when the season ended.

"I’ll make a decision that’s best for me, my family, and my football," he said recently.

Rovers had made a 'fantastic' offer to retain his services while Dundalk also made a push to sign the 2019 and 2020 PFAI Player of the Year and the 2020 SSE Airtricity/SWAI Personality of the Year.

Speaking last week, Hoops boss Stephen Bradley claimed it would have been a 'sackable offence' on his part not to have replacements lined up.

In recent weeks, ex-Burnley veteran Chris McCann and Bohemians' Danny Mandriou were signed by Rovers with a decision pending from Byrne.

However the loss of Byrne is a big blow to the Hoops' ambitions to retain the title next year, given his influence on the team.
