Jack Byrne retains place in Ireland squad, but Mick McCarthy hasn't asked Shamrock Rovers for him yet

Shamrock Rovers midfielder Jack Byrne has retained his place in the Republic of Ireland squad, but his availability for the upcoming training camp in Portugal hangs in the balance with Mick McCarthy yet to speak with the club.

Ireland are in the Algarve this day fortnight for a five-day training camp ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifiers with Denmark and Gibraltar in June.

While Byrne was not in the initial provisional squad for the March games against Gibraltar and Georgia, he was supplemented.

That was on the back of impressing McCarthy in the Hoops win over Sligo Rovers in Tallaght - and he then made the squad proper.

Byrne remains uncapped but McCarthy took a shine to him and the silky-skilled midfielder has a chance of making the final cut for the June games.

But league leaders Rovers have two league matches the week Ireland are in Portugal - away to Finn Harps on May 20 and home to Cork City on May 24.

And if Byrne cannot travel to the Algarve, it may count against him making the squad proper for the crunch double-header.

"Not at the moment,” said McCarthy when asked he had discussed the matter with the Hoops.

Asked if he would let Byrne play in the Cork game on the Friday, McCarthy said: “If I want him to come then probably not.

“But I've not really considered it - he’s playing for his club and they want to do as well as they can.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy is not unduly concerned by Robbie Brady’s enforced withdrawal at the weekend.

In his first Premier League start for Burnley since December, the midfielder came off 10-minutes from time.

Brady’s season has been ravaged by injury but McCarthy said: “I’ve not heard from Robbie or Sean Dyche. If he had a bad injury, someone would have told me.”

While Brady is included in the provisional squad for the training camp, Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark is not.

McCarthy said: “He's been injured and has not played so whether he’s still injured I don't know.

“But I wasn't going to leave any of the other four centre halves out to accommodate him.”
