Jack Byrne completes move to APOEL Nicosia as he signs two-year deal with Cyprus club

Jack Byrne has completed his move to APOEL Nicosia on a two-year deal that runs to May 2023.

The Ireland international confirmed in an emotional social media post last week that he had left Shamrock Rovers after two years with the Hoops.

He played a major role in the club's Premier Division title success last term.

New APOEL boss Mick McCarthy was keen to sign the midfielder he first capped at international in 2019 and Byrne flew to Cyprus last week for talks.

The 24-year-old Dubliner had to wait for the result of a Covid test before he could undergo a medical.

But he has quickly agreed the move and Byrne will wear the number 29 jersey for the Cypriot club.

APOEL are struggling this season, having suffered another loss on Saturday - a 2-0 defeat to basement club Paralimni - that leaves the club in 11 place in the league, just three places off the bottom.

"We welcome Jack Byrne to APOEL and wish him to celebrate titles and European successes with the blue and yellow," read a message on the club's official website.

APOEL are next in action tomorrow evening against Doxa, and it remains to be seen if Byrne will feature.
