The Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland has given £5,000 to Great Britain’s women’s deaf football team to enable them to take part in the Deaf World Cup in Italy.

The team’s campaign will cost £20,000 and a Just Giving appeal to raise half that amount has surpassed its target thanks to Butland’s gift.

“I’ve learnt a lot from major tournaments, experiences I’ll never forget,” Butland said on Twitter. “I’d love for you to experience the same!”

The midfielder Claire Stancliffe, who won bronze with Great Britain at the 2008 World Cup, praised the goalkeeper for helping to make the squad’s hopes of attending the tournament in June a reality. “Physically shaking. Thank you so much Jack Butland for the £5,000 donation. We are in shock,” she tweeted.

Lucy Bronze, Jade Moore, Jo Potter and Fran Kirby, from the full England women’s team, and Wales international Jess Fishlock, also donated money to the cause.

• This article was amended on 5 January 2015 to correct the spelling of Lucy Bronze’s name, from Luzy Bronze as an earlier version said.
