Jack Black reveals sons were behind A Minecraft Movie casting: My family are Minecrafters

Jack Black is stepping into the blocky world of Minecraft—and it’s all thanks to his kids. The actor and comedian, known for his energetic performances, revealed that his decision to join A Minecraft Movie came after some playful yet firm encouragement from his sons.

"My family are Minecrafters," Black shared. "I played Minecraft back in the day with my sons because I wanted to speak their language. My boys were like, ‘You have to do it. It’s Minecraft, Dad, don’t be dumb. Do it.’”

Reflecting on the game’s enduring popularity, he said, “I can feel it out there—all of the Minecrafters excited about this movie. It’s a phenomenon. This game has been loved by millions for years now, and it’s become generational. It’ll be cool to finally bring that universe into cinemas.”

Torfi Frans Olafsson, a creative director at Minecraft and a producer on the film, praised Black’s dedication to the film. He said, “We set up a realm for everyone to play together. Jack was always there, building crazy towers, stairways, and even an art gallery. The realm grew as more crew members joined, transforming into a beautiful village—purely out of their love for the game.”

Black will portray Steve—an expert crafter who helps a group of misfits navigate the game’s imaginative Overworld. Directed by Jared Hess, the film is the first live-action adaptation of the best-selling video game. Boasting of a star-studded cast, including Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. The story follows four ordinary individuals—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—who are transported through a mysterious portal into the cubic universe of Minecraft. To return home, they must learn to survive the world’s dangers, including Piglins and Zombies, while uncovering the creative potential within themselves.

A Minecraft Movie will be released in IMAX in India on April 4, 2025 in English and Hindi.
