Jacinta Nampijinpa Price Announces Plans To Run For Liberal Deputy Leader

Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has announced her plans to run for deputy leader of the Liberal Party, days after she stated she was stepping down from the Nationals on Thursday.

The move also comes after the ousting of former Coalition leader, Peter Dutton

The Northern Territory politician discussed her candidacy in a statement on Facebook earlier today.

“Today I announce my candidacy for the position of Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, and my endorsement of Angus Taylor’s candidacy for Leader of the Liberal Party,” Price wrote.

“As I’ve said with respect to my decision to change party rooms, these are not matters which I take lightly, and this decision today brings with it a great deal of responsibility which I fully accept.

“There is no question that returning to our roots as a party is critical right now.”

Price defected from the Nationals Party on Thursday, and stated that she could make a better contribution to the Coalition.

“The Liberal party room is my natural home given the Liberal Party is the freedom party, the party of responsibility,” Price told Sky News on Thursday.

“Given the current circumstance I think more than ever we need strong people and we need to be able to rebuild.”

Price’s move to leave the Nationals was described by Nationals leader David Littleproud as “disappointing”.

In Price’s statement on Facebook, she also stated that she wants to focus on the “forgotten Australians”, citing her grandparents as inspiration.

“We must once more remember and fight for the forgotten people, those on whose shoulders Australian society has been built and still depends,” she continued.

“I think of my grandparents, who were by no means the elite, building their first home by hand with hessian bags and washing their clothes in the creek in Warners Bay, NSW. But they saw a spark, a vision of a brighter future for generations to come.

“My Warlpiri grandparents caught the vision and transitioned from nomadic desert life into community life during the emergence of a modern Australia.”

The Coalition is set to vote on a new leader on Tuesday, May 13. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will be sworn in on Tuesday also.
