BHOPAL: Spotlight is once again on fire safety measures and mechanisms in city hospitals after the fire incident in Jabalpur hospital on Monday.
Making city hospitals safe from fire and besides getting NOC, the health department and civic body have been told to focus on mock drills.
However, the task that will make the most difference is giving the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) teeth to impose penalties over violations, according to officials seeking anonymity. A knee-jerk reaction to any fire incident like the one in Jabalpur on Monday, has once again focused the attention on fire safety and hospitals. Not too far ago, in November similar implosion of safety audit of hospitals was raised after newborns died in Kamla Nehru fire. Taking a lesson from the incident of fire at New Life Hospital in Jabalpur, mock drills will now be conducted in all the government and private hospitals in the state capital. At the same time, teams of district administration and municipal corporation will conduct regular inspections. On Tuesday, the collector held a big meeting of the responsible.
In the meeting, other officials, including the collector, insisted on getting an electric audit done along with the fire from the hospital officials. He said that most accidents are caused by short circuits.
