J.T. Poston puts stamp on Wyndham Championship with 1st PGA Tour victory

J.T. Poston was due for a victory on the PGA Tour since he had turned pro in 2015. Sunday, Poston delivered himself to the FedEx Cup playoffs by putting his stamp on the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

Poston, 26, saved his first career PGA Tour victory for the final event of the 2018-19 PGA Tour regular season in front of a supportive homestate crowd at Sedgefield Country Club by closing with an 8-under 62 while overcoming a 3-shot deficit in the final round.

He was 22-under overall at 258 and defeated Webb Simpson by 1 shot.

The shortened FedEx Cup Playoffs begin Thursday at Liberty National in New Jersey. Those players who rank in the top 125 of the points standings are eligible to participate. Poston will be among those teeing off Thursday as the victory was worth 500 points and pushed him from No. 83 to No. 27 in the projected FedEx Cup Points standings.

Tiger Woods is 28th. Woods earned 600 points for his Masters victory on April 14. But he has only played 12 rounds of competitive golf since and missed the cut in the PGA Championship and British Open.

The win also means a two-year PGA Tour exemption for Poston, along with invites to the 2020 Masters, PGA Championship and Players Championship.

Poston played 72 holes without a bogey and came into the final round tied for fifth place. He was the first player on the PGA Tour since Lee Trevino in 1972 to play a complete 72-hole, stroke-play event without playing a single hole over par.

“I probably haven’t had that many bogey-free rounds this year,” Poston said after his victory. “To be able to do four in a row is pretty special, and finish it off with a 62 on Sunday is pretty awesome.”

He also became the 14th first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season.
