J.R. Smith agrees to push back guarantee date for Cavs

The Cleveland Cavaliers may no longer be in business with LeBron James the player, but their relationship with Klutch Sports appears to be as strong as ever. On Saturday, they got something else out of their relationship with La Familia.

The Athletic’s Joe Vardon reported on Saturday afternoon that J.R. Smith agreed to push back the fully guarantee date on his contract from June 30 to August 1, allowing the team to have more time to find a trade partner. It was something Smith didn’t have to do, but since the Cavs still have Tristan Thompson and No. 5 pick Darius Garland on their roster, their relationship with Klutch Sports runs deep.

Although Smith allowed the Cavs some extra time to potentially get something for his expiring contract, many are expecting Smith to end up with LeBron James on the Lakers whenever he eventually hits free agency. Smith has been in the league for 15 years but essentially took a year off last season, working out in exile while the Cavs were in a rebuilding year. He played in only 11 games despite being healthy for the whole season.

Smith is a career 37% 3-point shooter.
