The top-tier division of J.League soccer started a new season on Friday even as various other events were being postponed or canceled due to the spread of the coronavirus.
About 13,000 spectators gathered at the Shonan BMW Stadium Hiratsuka in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, where the Shonan Bellmare hosted the Urawa Reds.
In a lively atmosphere, many members of management staff as well as spectators wore masks in an effort to prevent infection.
Before the game started shortly after 7 p.m., an announcement was repeatedly made: "If you're unwell, let us know."
When Shonan players arrived on a team bus, they did not give their usual high fives to fans.
Spectators had disinfectant sprayed on their hands when they entered the stadium. Doctors and nurses were standing by.
A 50-year-old company employee from Aizumisato, Fukushima Prefecture, said with a smile: "I was scared, but I've been looking forward to it for a long time. I'm glad the game was held."
A 24-year-old company employee from Hiratsuka, who has been a Shonan supporter for many years, said: "Due to the suspension period during the Tokyo Olympics, the schedule is tight. It is better to hold the game unless there is an infected person on the team."
The J.League planned to continue its official matches on Saturday and later, while observing the situation to decide whether to hold the games.
