The Yankees made it official on Monday, announcing the re-signing of left-hander J.A. Happ to a two-year contract with a vesting option for 2021.
Happ went 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA for the Yankees in the regular season after being acquired from the Blue Jays on July 26. Overall, the 36-year-old went 17-6 with a 3.65 ERA last season.
Happ will get paid $17 million a year for the first two seasons and has a $17 million vesting option for the third year. He will join Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton and CC Sabathia in a rotation that is probably set. But the Yankees can never be counted out if another starting pitcher they like becomes available via trade.
For now, though, general manager Brian Cashman will likely turn his free-agent attention to relievers and Wednesday's meeting with mega-star Manny Machado.
Machado met with the Chicago White Sox on Monday, according to USA Today, and is expected to travel to Philadelphia to meet with the Phillies on Thursday after his sitdown with Yankees brass.
