PILIBHIT: The Izzatnagar division of North Eastern (NE) Railway has converted 40 discarded ICF passenger coaches (made by integrated coach factory) into 'new modified goods coaches' with high-speed potential (NMGHS) in a record time period of just 5 months.
NE railway PRO Rajendra Singh said, "The NE railway had been assigned the conversion target for as many as 100 ICF coaches, of which 60 coaches had been allotted to Gorakhpur division. These coaches are capable of running at a speed of up to 110/km an hour."
The newly converted coaches will help enhance the capacity of NE railway to transport automobiles within a short time due to high-speed potential.
Singh said that the coaches were converted especially to transport two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles, which were equipped with advanced and sophisticated systems in comparison to the traditional NMG coaches.
"Our engineers have used the improved ramp assemblies for easier loading of automobiles in coaches, lashing channels for proper securing of vehicles, fully welded chequered and perforated plate floor, 8 louvers for proper ventilation, natural pipe light illumination and four sliding doors in addition to barrel locking system in each coach," Singh further added.
Meanwhile, the NE railway's Gorakhpur-based chief public relation officer, Pankaj Singh, said that the Gorakhpur division also achieved its target of converting 60 ICF coaches by the end of April.
