Izaac Stubblety-Cook has continued Australia's run of form in the Olympic pool, snatching gold in the men's 200 metres breaststroke.

Stubblety-Cook was third at the final turn but stormed home in lane 4 to defeat Dutchman Arno Kamminga and Matti Mattsson of Finland in an Olympic record time of 2 minutes, 6.38 seconds.

Kamminga finished with a time of 2:07.01 and Mattsson 2:07.13.

The 22-year-old, who trains in Brisbane, swam a blistering back half of the race, recovering from a sluggish start that saw him in sixth at the first turn.

Stubblety-Cook said he maintained belief that he would time his fast finish to perfection.

"So, at these Games I won't try to change a strength … It's too late for that. I'm definitely just happy that the process pulled off."

He said the gold medal finish was "unbelievable" and thanked his family who were watching on from Australia.

"Without their support I couldn't be here," he said.

"But it's been a tough five years, and I'm lost for words, to be honest."

It is Australia's seventh gold medal of the Games and its fifth victory in the pool, lifting the country’s medal tally to 17.

Earlier, Australian Jack McLoughlin finished fifth in the men’s 800m freestyle final.

McLoughlin finished with a time of 7:45.00 behind American Robert Fink, who won gold in 7:41.87.
