The Ivy League announced Wednesday that it was shutting down all spring sports, the biggest NCAA conference to do so yet and the first in Division I. Several Ivy League schools have already shut down because of the coronavirus and switched to online classes, which the conference cited in its announcement.
"In accordance with the guidance of public health and medical professionals, several Ivy League institutions have announced that students will not return to campus after spring break, and classes will be held virtually during the semester," the schools' presidents said in a joint statement. "Given this situation, it is not feasible for practice and competition to continue."
The conference also said it would let individual schools decide whether winter sport athletes compete in their NCAA championships. The basketball tournaments were already canceled, with teams advancing to March Madness automatically, and Harvard stopped several runners from competing in this weekend's NCAA indoor track championships.
The Ivy spring championships that were canceled are in men's and women's golf, lacrosse, track and field, softball, baseball and women's rowing.
