Ivanka Trump has defended her use of a private email account as she was moving into an adviser's position in her father's administration.

The elder daughter of President Donald Trump said using the email account when she was transitioning into an administration job cannot be compared to the flap over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's private email server.

In an interview with ABC News on Wednesday, Mrs Trump said her private account emails were archived, contained no classified information and were not deleted.

The Washington Post reported this month that she used the personal email account to conduct official government business.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress say they are reviewing the situation to make sure she complied with federal records law.

In 2009, Mrs Clinton set up an email server at her home and relied on it for all her electronic correspondence - both work-related and personal.

Mrs Clinton said she never knowingly emailed classified information from the server.
