Ivan Toney would be Celtic 50 goal 'sensation' if Hoops had splashed the cash

Ivan Toney would have been a 50-goal Celtic “sensation” if they’d broken the bank for him.

That’s according to Peterborough director of football Barry Fry, who’s criticised the Scottish Premiership runners up for trying to get Toney on the cheap.

Toney joined Championship promotion hopefuls Brentford in a deal worth up to £10million, while Neil Lennon ended up spending half that amount on the disappointing Albian Ajeti instead.

Ajeti has struggled to get a regular game under both Lennon and interim successor John Kennedy.

Toney on the other hand, has bagged 28 goals for the Bees and Fry chastised the Hoops for missing out on an in form striker he saw develop from a raw talent at London Road.

He told Football Fancast: "Toney would have got 40/50 goals playing in Scotland, no disrespect to Scottish Football.

"He would have been a sensation because Toney doesn’t only score goals, he makes goals.

"He doesn’t only score goals and make goals, he’s also the best defender we’ve had. He goes back for corners and free-kicks and nine out of 10 times, he’s the one that clears it out the box.

“And he’s hungry. He wants to listen he wants to learn, he wants to improve.

"He’ll go to the very top, Ivan Toney, that’s for sure. I’m sure they do (regret not signing Toney) already.

"I’m sure they regret it, not breaking the bank for him.”

Brentford sit in the play-off positions but can move ti within five points of second placed Watford and automatic promotion if they win their game in hand.
