Ivan Toney transfer 'truth' as Celtic target's future takes fresh twist after defiant Darragh MacAnthony update

Defiant Darragh MacAnthony insists nothing is guaranteed over Ivan Toney's future despite speculation that a £10m transfer to Brentford is in the offing.

The Peterborough owner broke social media silence after talkSPORT reported The Bees had agreed a bumper fee to seal a deal for the League One top scorer.

It comes after weeks of fervent speculation with MacAnthony and his sporting director Barry Fry urging Celtic to move quick to avoid missing out on Toney.

He posted on Twitter: "Nothing is true until you hear it from our club."

The Premiership champions have scouted Toney on several occasions and are huge admirers of the 24-year-old.

Neil Lennon has already landed Albian Ajeti this summer in a £5m deal with the Switzerland international turning heads in training.

And a deal for Toney will be a serious outlay for any side - with only one year remaining on his deal at London Road.

A clutch of teams have been keeping close tabs on the former Newcastle man after his goal-laden run last season where he netted 26 times in all competitions.

MacAnhony revealed last week that he had been hounded by Hoops supporters on social media urging him to do a deal for Toney with Celtic.

He said: “It’s been a frustrating time with regard to Ivan. I’ve had Celtic fans telling me we shouldn’t be asking £5m for a League One player, but believe me the deal we negotiated a couple of weeks ago was for a lot more than that.

“Ivan was given permission to speak to the club but so far nothing has happened.

“There are other clubs negotiating to buy him. Others are going to join the party. There are Premier League clubs having recruitment meetings in the next few days.

“There’s a big club, which isn’t in England, involved, but we won’t have our pants pulled down on the fee.

"We promised Ivan last January he could leave if we didn’t go up and he can, but for the right fee. He’s worth what we say he is worth.

"We are like the Mounties, we always get our man and we always get the price we want for our man.

“The manager would like the deal done quickly so he can get on with things. I get that, but the manager doesn’t pay the bills."
