Ivan Toney transfer countdown as Celtic target pushed closer to the exit door

In-demand Ivan Toney has edged closer to the Peterborough exit door after the arrival of Jonson Clarke-Harris on Thursday.

The former Bristol Rovers striker appears a ready-made replacement for the Celtic -linked striker who is poised to leave London Road.

Outspoken Posh chief Darragh MacAnthony admitted last week his side has some work to do ahead of the impending League One salary cap of £2.5million.

That was before the deal for Clarke-Harris and the need to move players on was also made abundantly clear by Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson.

He said: “There have to be players who leave. With the salary cap and the amount of players that I am allowed in it, and having signed players recently.

"It means some existing members of the squad will have to leave, that is just the way it is and it is something that we are trying to complete as soon as we can.”

It's believed Brentford had a bid accepted for 24-year-old Toney earlier this month but Neil Lennon 's side are also long-term admirers of the player, who they have scouted on several occasions.

Celtic added former Peterborough No.2 Gavin Strachan to their coaching staff this summer and he is a huge admirer of the man who scored 26 goals in all competitions.

Posh are determined not to lose their main man on the cheap even though he only has one year remaining on his deal and want in excess of £9m for his services.

Celtic have already signed Albian Ajeti this summer but the £5m man is still not match fit and came off the bench in Wednesday's disastrous Champions League exit to Ferencvaros.

Patryk Klimala was an unused sub and Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths both missed the defeat due to injury.
