Ivan Toney has his sights set on playing in the Premier League next season - and Newcastle United stand to benefit from a 'very large' sell-on clause if the Peterborough United No 9 moves on to pastures new.
The former Magpies' striker has attracted interest from eight clubs after finishing the season as League One's top scorer after plundering 24 goals in the third-tier.
Back in January, club chiefs told Toney that if Peterborough did not win promotion to the Championship, they would be prepared to let him go for the right price. The Posh ultimately missed out on the play-offs and finished seventh after the season was decided on unweighted points per game.
Wherever Toney ends up, Newcastle will be entitled to a percentage of the transfer fee and Daragh MacAnthony, Peterborough's chairman, previously confirmed a 'very large' sell-on clause was inserted into the striker's contract when he joined the club in 2018.
So far, only one bid from an unnamed Championship club has matched Peterborough's asking price but Toney turned down the move and hopes to play at the 'highest possible level' in the Premier League.
"You've got to be confident. Otherwise, there's no point setting out to play at the top level," he told Sky Sports News on Tuesday.
"I feel like my ability will get me there and whether it is now or next season or whenever it is, I'm sure I'll be able to look after myself in the Premier League and do a very good job."
Toney previously made one appearance in the top-flight for Newcastle as a late substitute in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea in 2015.
