Ivan Toney reveals Rangers transfer option as Ally McCoist left stunned by revelation after infamous Celtic near miss

Ivan Toney has revealed he was close to signing for Rangers, following an infamous near miss for their city rivals.

The striker was on the verge of moving to Celtic in the summer of 2020 but the Parkhead club wouldn't meet Peterborough's asking price.

Toney went on to fire Brentford to promotion with 33 goals in 52 games and has hit the ground running in the Premier League with two in four.

Gers legend Ally McCoist couldn't help but hark back to that infamous near miss, telling the striker on talkSPORT he's never been so relieved that a player didn't sign for Celtic.

But the Ibrox club's record goalscorer was left stunned as Toney replied: "Like you said I was going to sign for Celtic - but I was also going to sign for Rangers.

"So you might react to that..."

McCoist did indeed react as he reeled at the news the Brentford standout could have been strutting his stuff in blue.

He exclaimed: "I didn't know that!

"Oh, you've killed me! I didn't know that, man!"

Toney's move to Brentford was worth a reported £5million with up to £10m in add-ons, a record fee for Peterborough.
