Ivan Toney confirms Celtic transfer talks at Lennoxtown but insists signing call is club's 'miss'

Ivan Toney has revealed he visited Celtic ’s training ground last year but the Hoops “weren’t keen” on signing him.

The Brentford striker has hit 29 goals for the Bees this season as they look to follow Norwich City into the Premier League as Championship runners up.

Toney was heavily linked with a move to the Hoops from Peterborough last summer, but Posh director for football Barry Fry has since claimed that the Scottish Premiership runners up were reluctant to pay the fee required to land the former Newcastle man.

Toney has previously said he believes Celtic’s disastrous season might have had a different outcome if they’d taken the plunge and signed him.

And now he’s admitted he went to Lennoxtown for talks while Neil Lennon was still in charge, but for whatever reason, the club weren’t keen to get a deal done.

Instead, they dropped big money on Swiss flop Albian Ajeti to provide competition for Odsonne Edouard.

But Toney doesn’t appear to harbour any regrets, insisting the decision was Celtic’s loss.

He told TalkSport: "I was actually very close. I went up there and spoke to everybody.

"I was actually at the training ground and looking around and all that so it got to those stages.

"But I just don't think they were too keen on signing me.

"I guess it's their miss now."
