ITV denies it will air Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? cheating episode that inspired Quiz

ITV bosses have denied the channel will air the Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? cheating episode following the success of Quiz.

In 2001 Charles Ingram was accused of cheating his way to winning £1million with the help of an alleged accomplice, Tecwen Wittock, and his wife Diana in the audience who would cough to signify the right answer.

The scandal has a new generation gripped as the story plays out in drama Quiz, and rumours have circulated on social media that the original show could air the night after the final episode airs.

The official twitter account for Who Wants to be a Millionaire? whipped fans into a frenzy on Tuesday night by posting: "Watch this story unfold on QUIZ & see everything for yourself on THURSDAY!"

They added a clip of Charles answering the £32,000 question, one of the key moments that raised suspicion in 2001.

However, an ITV spokesperson has denied the channel will be showing Charles' episode.

They said: "There are no plans to air this episode on ITV. There are rumours floating around but this isn’t the case nor in the schedule."

Charles' winning episode was due to be shown between September 15 and 18 in 2001 but production company Celador decided to drop the broadcast as a police investigation got underway.

In 2003 the Ingrams were convicted of procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception and were handed suspended sentences, each fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £10,000 towards prosecution costs, which was later increased to £65,000.

After the court case ITV broadcast a documentary about the scandal called Millionaire: A Major Fraud, the first time many viewers had seen what happened.

ITV2 then chose to broadcast the scrapped episode after.
