ITV Who Wants to be a Millionaire player saved by 'total stranger'

A contestant on Who Wants to be a Millionaire was saved by a "total stranger" tonight - but some viewers thought it was the presenter who lent a helping hand.

The popular quiz show, presented by Jeremy Clarkson, sees players answer a series of questions to win increasing cash sums with the top prize being £1million.

On tonight's episode, which was a repeat, viewers watched as one player struggled with a question - only to phone a stranger for help.

For £16,000, player Seville was asked which mountain was not climbed as part of the National Three Peaks challenge.

After exhausting several of her lifelines, she was left with Scafell Pike and Helvellyn as her options.

She phoned a friend, Graham, who wasn't actually her friend - he was a colleague of her partner who Seville didn't actually know.

Graham said he thought D, Scafell Pike, was part of the challenge.

After the phone call, Seville asked Jeremy: "He did say D there, didn’t he?"

The 58-year-old presenter said: "He said he thought Scafell Pike was part of it."

Jeremy went on to add: "Pretty certain that’s what he said."

Seville chose option B, Helvellyn, and went on to win the £16,000 with Jeremy saying: "A total stranger helped you out there, you're through."

Some viewers felt it was Jeremy who had helped the contestant and not the stranger.

On Twitter, John said: "Can’t believe @JeremyClarkson just helped a contestant on Who wants to be a millionaire".

Another viewer replied to his tweet and said: "Glad it wasn’t just me. He definitely steered her to Helvellyn when the friend said Scafell. Wonder if they’ll issue an apology."
