ITV viewers slam channel for cancelling fan favourite Jane Austen drama Sanditon

ITV viewers have slammed the channel for cancelling the popular Jane Austen drama Sanditon.

The broadcaster cited ratings as the issue for not bringing back the show, but its loyal fan base are furious.

An ITV spokesperson told RadioTimes.com: "We loved Sanditon and we were very proud to have it on ITV.

"We would have loved it to return, but unfortunately we just didn’t get the audience that would make that possible for us, which is heartbreaking for everybody involved in this wonderful adaptation.

"Sanditon is yet to air in the US and we hope they may find a way of continuing with this series."

Viewers took to Twitter to vent their anger at the cancellation of the series, especially considering it ended on a cliff-hanger.

One @EvieEva2 said: "Just still can’t believe @ITV. Seriously wondering how they function as a broadcaster - poor press team performance and scheduling, archaic audience measuring and absolute blindness to its heartwarming brilliance."

Another @4eva_optimist said: "@ITV worst mistake ever. The only way to put things right is #sanditonseason2"

A third, @gormally_m said: " It is incomprehensible that you would do this @Itv"

Some even appealed to other networks, @gormally_m said: " Dear @BBCFirstAus @NetflixUK @Netflix @bbctvcentre May I suggest you take a good look at #Sanditon. A fantastic period drama. A second series is needed as fans are screeming for more. It is up for grabs and you could be the ones to oblige."

But there could still be hope, as a spokesperson for Red Planet Pictures who produce Sanditon said: "We’re very proud of Sanditon and look forward to seeing how it’s received on [US channel] Masterpiece in January.

"We will obviously explore all opportunities to keep the world of Sanditon alive."
