ITV This Morning viewers blast Leo Sayer after The Beatles 'insult'

Leo Sayer came under fire for his cover version of The Beatles on today's This Morning.

The iconic singer was interviewed by Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes on Wednesday's edition of ITV's flagship daytime programme.

Leo joined the show via satellite from his home in New South Wales and was taking a look back at his storied 50 years in the music industry.

Rochelle and Phil quizzed the musician on his latest album titled Northern Songs, which features covers of songs by The Beatles.

The 73-year-old said he first had the idea of an album dedicated to The Fab Four around 10 years ago.

He explained: "I was experimenting with some new toys and I found myself leaning towards The Beatles.

"If I was doing my own songs I'd be very biased in thinking I've got to protect this, but I started having a lot of fun.

"I thought what would happen if Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney got together and worked out, for instance, Eleanor Rigby.

"So I started singing Eleanor Rigby to the riff of Billie Jean and it fit. I thought could I get away with recording it and I got great enthusiasm from all my friends."

Phillip Schofield described the album as "brave" before the show broadcast Leo Sayer's new version of Hey Jude.

However, viewers following the show on Twitter were unimpressed by the cover version.

Mick posted: "Im not much of a country music fan but i’ll take it over Leo Sayer murdering the Beatles any day of the week"

One user said: "What did The Beatles ever do to Leo Sayer to provoke that cruel revenge attack?"

Sue added: "No Leo, don't kid yourself that a rehash of the Beatles is a good idea. My poor ears!"

Bridget commented : "No you don’t do that to The Beatles"

Chris messaged: "Someone needs to phone the police & report Leo Sayer for murdering The Beatles."

Fer posted: "What is this insult towards the Beatles?"

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub
