ITV This Morning's Phillip Schofield tells viewers how he lost weight on the 5:2 diet

Phillip Schofield has revealed to ITV This Morning viewers how he lost weight and became happy with his body.

The 57-year-old silver fox was talking to nutrition expert Dr Zoe Williams as she debunked myths about fasting.

Phil said he had lost weight and kept it off with a particular fasting diet.

He said: "I did the 5:2 diet and I was very happy with the results. I shrunk my stomach down and haven't put any of it back on."

Dr Williams agreed that these types of diets could help kick start someone weight loss, but warned not everyone should try them out.

Pregnant women, breastfeeding mums, people who are underweight or don't need to lose weight, children and those with a history of an eating disorder should not attempt fasting-style diets.

People with diabetes are also advised against it, but some can benefit following discussions with their GP.

What is the 5:2 diet?

The basic rules of this part-time diet are to eat what you want for five days of a seven day week, then eat nothing for two of the days.

It made headlines in 2013 when the intermittent fasting became the fashionable way to lose weight.

People undertaking the diet are advised to eat a 'normal' amount of calories over the five days and just eat about 25% of the recommended daily intake on two of the days - usually about 500 calories for women and 600 for men.

What does the NHS say?

The NHS says there are many alternatives to fasting in order to lose weight as they say evidence of safety around this type of diet is 'limited'.

They cite a number of limitations to studies and research into intermittent fasting, with many claims that it increases lifespan and prevents cognitive decline.

They also added: "People who have a problem with their cholesterol levels, blood pressure, diabetes or heart health should always consult their GP before starting a fasting-style diet."
