ITV This Morning's Phillip Schofield in sweary posts as he puts himself forward for leadership race

Phillip Schofield has joined the long list of celebrities jokingly putting their hat in the ring to be the country's next Prime Minister after another astonishing week in government. Earlier this week, Liz Truss officially resigned as the Conservative Party leader after just 44 days in office.

Ms Truss resigned in a statement outside Downing Street on Thursday afternoon (October 20). She said in the statement, with her husband Hugh O’Leary alongside her, that she told the King she is resigning as leader of the Conservative Party. She said she would stay on as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen via a leadership election to be held within the next week

And supporters of Boris Johnson are backing the former PM to make an extraordinary political comeback following Ms Truss' dramatic resignation just six weeks after he left No 10 for the final time when he was forced out by his own MPs.

On Friday evening, This Morning host Phillip had clearly been keeping up to date with the political fallout during his half-term break from the ITV daytime show. He took to his Instagram Story to share a throwback snap of himself outside Number 10 Downing Street and shared a rather sweary message.

He could be seen outside the famous building, being soaked by rain, as he donned a white shirt and red tie under a smark overcoat. The 60-year-old typed: "Ffs.. ok then, surely even I couldn't make this s*** any worse?!"

And he's not the only one to think they could give running the country a whirl. Spice Girl Emma Bunton shared her own photo outside the door of Number 10 on Instagram and wrote: " Am I gonna have to sort this s**t out?!?" before adding the hashtag 'Baby For PM'.

Phillip's This Morning co-star Dermot O'Leary also backed Alison Hammond for the position. He shared a photo on Instagram of a podium which was mocked up by the ITV show earlier this month. "There's hope with Hammond," a sign on the wooden podium read and was used when Alison, 47, gave her own manifesto live on air after it was revealed she was among the public's choice of celebrity PM's.

"Can we just stop messing around and sort this out please. @alisonhammond55," Dermot wrote and he was quickly being flooded with comments. Fellow This Morning star Rochelle Humes said: "She’s got my vote!!!" While Russell T Davies replied: "Come ON."

Back to Phillip and earlier this week he showed how keen he was to get back to his day job on This Morning after showing what he had been up to during his week off. Taking to his Instagram Story he showed it's not all glamourous for TV's biggest stars. Alongside a photograph of bulb packets, he told his Instagram followers: "What did I do in my half term break? .... bulb planting!"

Phillip then posted a snap of his empty cupboards, adding: "And cleaning out the cupboards!!" He then remarked: "Definitely ready to get back on @ThisMorning on Monday!"
