ITV This Morning's Matthew Wright slams Queen's Jubilee celebrations as a 'disgrace' in blistering attack

Matthew Wright didn't shy away from his true feelings as he appeared on This Morning. The former The Wright Stuff host appeared on the ITV daytime show on Friday (June 3) alongside Gyles Brandreth to chat about the latest news headlines.

Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond were once again hosting the show with the studio having been decked out with Union Jack bunting. As they sat down with their guests for the latest 'This Morning's View' segment, it was of course dominated by the celebration which marked the start of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee on Thursday (June 2).

The royal family were out in force at the annual military parade Trooping the Colour before the 96-year-old monarch appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony in front of thousands of people as they watched the latest flypast. The event marked the start of four days worth of events for both the royal family and the public as the Queen celebrates 70 years on the throne.

As Alison and Dermot discussed the first day's highlights their guests, Matthew soon shared his own thoughts. "We were talking earlier and it's wonderful and the spectacle I get, but at a time when we are haemorrhaging money as a country," he said. "If you were some kind of celebrity, who's spending loads, millions, on parties when you're sort of bankrupt, people would be outraged and this is a disgrace. But that's what we're doing as a nation."

"What do you think we should be doing?" Dermot then asked as Matthew replied: "I think it could all be scaled down just a bit," before later fuming the celebrations were being "funded by the public purse." But Alison argued: "If this is the end of an era, surely we should be making a big deal of things? If this is the last time where this is ever going to happen. So yeah, let's see enjoy it."

But his comments caused a divide among This Morning viewers. @RyanShaw2709 Oh bore off tweeted: "@Matthew_Wright. If you don’t want to celebrate the queen’s incredible service and platinum jubilee, something that will probably never happen again, stay at home you killjoy. The rest of us want to meet and have a good time after 2 years of lockdowns #ThisMorning."

@shiv3000x said: "Omg shut up Matthew ffs we get it #Thismorning." @kazzee84 wrote: "#thismorning Please stop Matthew Wright from speaking!" But @IckieBickie argued: "Matthew Wright is trying to save you all from being brainwashed to blindly support an unelected person born into a privileged position, idiots. #ThisMorning."
