ITV This Morning's Martin Lewis issues warning to summer holidaymakers amid Brexit

If Britain crashes out of a the European Union without a deal , UK travellers will be subjected to additional border checks and healthcare changes.

Last month, the European Commission said healthcare access using the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for both UK citizens in the EU and EU citizens in the UK will no longer be available in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

And according to Martin Lewis, who appeared on This Morning , the Brexit process has put some people off renewing their European Health Insurance Card.

The EHIC gives you access to state-run hospitals and GPs in the EU at the same cost as a local. So if it's free for them, it's free for you.

However, Martin's team discovered that EHIC renewals in the three months before Britain was supposed to leave the EU on March 29 were the lowest in at least nine years.

He said this is most likely due to Brexit uncertainty and whether the EHIC will continue to be valid after the UK leaves the EU.

But with Brexit delayed, it's pretty much a given that EHICs will continue to work this summer.

So if you have booked a holiday abroad to Europe, you still need to have one.

And Martin warned that even if you have one already, it's important to check it's still valid, as 5.4 million are due to expire this year.

Everyone (including children) needs their own valid card. The expiry date of the card is on the front of it (bottom right).

If yours is out of date you can renew if for free of the official  EHIC website .
