Matthew Wright tells why he missed baby's first Christmas on ITV's This Morning

This Morning's Holly and Phil were initially left surprised when presenter Matthew Wright revealed he missed his baby's first Christmas for a solo holiday in the Caribbean.

The former Wright Stuff presenter opened up to the presenting duo about why he chose to spend Christmas alone, away from his wife and how the decision left him "in tears on Christmas Day".

He said the choice to get away from it all "did him the world of good" after he'd faced battles with his mental health.

Holly said: "You spent Christmas and New Year alone in the Caribbean, away from your wife and 11-month-old baby.

"Did you miss your baby's first Christmas? Why?"

The presenting duo questioned Matthew Wright about why he left the UK (ITV)

Matthew said it was a "difficult" decision and Holly added "I imagine it would have been... for your wife!"

The 54-year-old candidly spoke about problems he'd had with his mental health before Christmas and said he took his wife's advice to take some time out.

He said: "I've had a lot of mental health issues over the last year and a half. [I've had] a friend's suicide, problems at Channel 5, other personal problems.

"And there was a story written about me, a fake story about me losing my job just before Christmas and it knocked me sideways.

"And my wife said, you know, 'What's the point of you being here, not sleeping, and she said 'Go away, do something that's good for you'."

Although the choice to leave was "very difficult" he said it was good for him, despite saying he "cried his eyes out" on Christmas Day.

Holly replied: "Your wife gave you the best Christmas gift she could have gave you, which was your mind."
