ITV This Morning's Eamonn Holmes calls out 'stupid people on Twitter' in furious rant on air

Eamonn Holmes launched into a furious rant aimed at "stupid people on Twitter" during This Morning.

The 59-year-old was caught on his phone by his wife and co-host Ruth Langsford and she asked what he was doing.

He said: "I am talking to stupid people on Twitter."

While she said he shouldn't bother, he added: "There are things when you are doing a TV programme that people do not understand.

"Saying 'you're talking over your wife', I had to do that because I had to take the reigns."

He was referring to a tweet about cutting off Ruth in the previous segment about recycling so that the show could go to their advert break.

Twitter user said: "@thismorning @EamonnHolmes continues to interrupt Ruth Langsford he is rude, infuriating and obnoxious."

He responded: "You have no understanding of what was happening. I needed to do that for reasons you have no clue about. Sorry but you are attacking the wrong person."

The original tweet has now been deleted, but many of his fans supported his words, one @mrsbirchall said: "I met @EamonnHolmes at a child bereavement charity event and he is none of those things. A total gent."

Another, @justinelouisew said: "Actually just followed you because you said this just a moment ago ... love your work sir."

*This Morning is on ITV1 weekdays and Sundays from 10:30am
