ITV The Masked Singer viewers convinced they know Doughnuts' identity

Fans of ITV's The Masked Singer think they have a sweet idea as to which secret celeb is behind Doughnut's doughy disguise.

Viewers have been frantically trying to guess which stars are hiding behind this series' increasingly elaborate costumes, with recent OTT favourites including Lionfish, Traffic Cone, Rockhopper, Mushroom, Panda, Firework and Poodle.

But the one character that's really been causing a stir is Doughnuts, who is set to return to the stage tonight (Saturday, January 8) for the programme’s special Movie Night episode.

A whole host of guesses have been ventured so far - from DJ Nick Grimshaw (who's been panellist Rita Ora's prime pick) to ex-footie star-turned-pundit Gary Lineker.

However, sticking with the sporting theme, it's former England superstar Michael Owen who many are saying has been putting the "Oh!" in Doughnut.

Fans have been taking to social media to talk about possibly detecting a Liverpool accent underneath all that latex and there was also a mention of 'crisps' - Owen having had is own special edition brand of 'cheese and Owen' flavour Walkers around the time of his first World Cup appearance.

In addition, he's described himself as "extra speedy" and made an off-the-cuff remark about being a jockey, possibly a reference to the fact Owen has a well documented love of thoroughbreds and owns several.

"He has his own race horses and has got a scouse accent," posted @carhammers on Twitter, while @helenyorks added, "It's his voice - forget all the other 'clues'. Is the bookies open?"

The Masked Singer is on ITV tonight at 7pm.
